Requiem Aeternam

What help could I possibly provide
To the crimson stained bodies
Strewn across the ground, gasping
For their last breath, like livestock
Strung up in a monstrous slaughterhouse.
What else can they do,
But simply wait to be butchered?

Their forlorn eyes draw me towards them,
Pleading me to be their saviour.
Yet at the sound of shells darting past,
The incessant cries of helpless men
Quiet down to a deafening silence.
My courage drains out of me slowly
Like water leaking out of broken pipes.

I take one last glance at them,
Abandoned, alone, cast aside.
And I turn away.

Pain pierces me as I collapse
To my knees. My blood trickles out,
My breath escapes, my throat tightens.
I flail, I struggle, I writhe in agony.
As my vision fades, I lie down
To accept the inevitable fate
Of requiem aeternam, eternal rest.
My friend and I wrote this poem for an English assignment a while back. Enjoy! (It is about war)
